Roan Creek Fish Barrier Project
In April 2026, the Middle Colorado Watershed Council completed the Roan Creek Fish Barrier project, a multi-agency-funded effort that protects a rare native fish assemblage—including a unique strain of Colorado River cutthroat trout—while also modernizing irrigation infrastructure to improve water efficiency and delivery for local users.
The Economic Contribution of Recreation in the Middle Colorado Watershed
This 2018 Earth Economics report estimates that outdoor recreation in the Middle Colorado River Watershed generates about $139 million in annual spending, supporting roughly 972 jobs and contributing $43 million to GDP and $6 million in state and local tax revenue for Garfield County.

This study compiled and analyzed water quality data from throughout the Middle Colorado watershed to identify areas where water quality issues may be present, identify areas that could benefit from restoration, identify water quality data gaps, and recommend strategies to improve and guide future water quality monitoring.
